Staff from the TSCI subject group of London Metropolitan Business School are currently working on producing teaching casebooks for business studies teachers. The books have been developed with teachers and students in the North London area and the cases are written in conjunction with managers at Arsenal Football Club. Each case is focused on a particular aspect of the business of operating a professional sporting club. The casebook will be published in two volumes of ten cases covering areas such as sponsorship, customer care and experience, organisational structure, finance and corporate hospitality. Although these sport management concepts are very similar to situations that occur in the ‘normal’ world of work the world of professional sport has interesting business issues that can be covered as part of a complete business curriculum.
It is intended that the casebook will provide activities for students from GCSE to Undergraduate courses. Each case is supported with supplementary information for instructors of courses ensuring that the cases are in accordance with the national curriculum. The partnership between TSCI and Arsenal is also the focus of a paper to be presented at the Euro 2008 Conference in Bern, Switzerland in May.
